Ergonomics

What are Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the scientific study of people at work. The goal of this type of study is to reduce stress on the body, prevent injuries, and eliminate musculoskeletal disorders associated with the kind of repetitive tasks that exist in any given workplace. This can be done by making adjustments to work spaces, controls, tools, lighting, equipment, and displays to make sure they fit an employee's needs and encourage proper movement and alignment. Addressing ergonomics will help relieve pain, avoid injury, and encourage more efficient work.

Why is it important to address Ergonomics in a chiropractic treatment plan?

The spinal manipulation that happens during a chiropractic adjustment is only part of the injury recovery equation. While adjustment will ultimately lead the rest of the body to proper alignment, unless you address the underlying cause, you will continue to experience pain and injury. The physicians at Herald Square Chiropractic and Sport believe that, in order to address total body wellness, muscle alignment, functional exercises, and ergonomic modifications, in addition to chiropractic adjustment, can keep the body healthy and injury-free. The providers at HSCS equip each patient with the individualized treatment plan and education that will be most effective in addressing any injury for the long-term.

Is my employer responsible for making Ergonomic adjustments to my workstation?

According to the US Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), workers have the right to a safe workplace. From their website,

"The law requires employers to provide their employees with safe and healthful workplaces. The OSHA law also prohibits employers from retaliating against employees for exercising their rights under the law (including the right to raise a health and safety concern or report an injury)." This means that you are entitled to ergonomic workplace adjustments that will make you safer, healthier, and ultimately more productive.
