Why Is the Gonstead System Considered the "Gold Standard"?

Chiropractic care treats imbalances of the musculoskeletal system, and the Gold Standard method was appropriately developed by a doctor of chiropractic with a background in mechanical engineering.

The Gonstead System focuses on five key components that address problems with the mechanical structure of the spine while providing a systemic approach to diagnosis, treatment, and rebalancing.

At  Herald Square Chiropractic and Sport, the Gonstead System is our foundational approach to your health and wellness. Today, we’ll take a closer look at the five components of the Gonstead system and their benefits.

1. Health history

The Gonstead system starts with a comprehensive review of your current symptoms and past health history. There are valuable clues in your symptoms and history that may point at problem areas in your spine. Knowing what ails you helps us find potential spinal contributors.

2. Posture assessment

Your spine should be a shallow S-curve from front to back. Extending from that, your shoulders and hips are meant to be parallel with the ground. Assessing tilts and tips in your posture points to problem areas in your spine.

3. The bilateral thermocouple

A key instrument used with the Gonstead system is the bilateral thermocouple. This heat-sensing device exposes temperature differences on each side of your spine. The Gonstead technique is based on spinal disc compression as a symptom of vertebral imbalances (subluxations).

As we run the thermocouple down your spine, we can pinpoint places where parallel disc alignment is disrupted, causing inflammation on the compressed side — another clue about where we need to focus your treatment.

4. Palpation

The Gonstead system is hands-on. We can feel instances of altered muscle tone, myofascial knots, and areas of swelling. In some cases, we can detect directions or patterns of movement that affect your spine.

5. X-rays

Understanding the condition of your spine isn’t complete without an X-ray to assess the internal condition of your vertebrae. While spinal discs don’t show up well on X-ray imaging, their condition can be implied by the relationship of adjacent vertebrae, which should be parallel to each other. X-rays also reveal fractures and congenital deformities that impact the spine.

The Gonstead system is evidence-based. We complete the five Gonstead components before we even begin to treat your subluxations. Gonstead treatments are specific and targeted, focused on delivering the most effective and personalized chiropractic care available.
